The Pohutukawa Bay Affair: A Novel (Written by Kathy Boyes. Graphics by Jane Meder)

The Pohutukawa Bay Affair is not a conventional murder mystery but, to quote D.L. Sayers, “a love story with detective interludes.”

For about a year the affair between Jake Carrano and Polly Mitchell is the subject of the breathless interest not only of the other inhabitants of Pohutukawa Bay, but also of the New Zealand media. Jake is NZ’s very own multi-millionaire, and the lady isn’t one of his usual bimbos, but a pretty varsity lecturer. Then a business acquaintance is murdered on Jake’s patio and everything is turned topsy-turvy. The two lovers, the detective on the case, Jake’s ex, her second husband and stepson, Polly’s academic colleagues, and even a local motel owner are radically affected as the repercussions of the murder spread out like ripples on a pond when a stone is tossed into it.
